Infection Control Policy

The following information will help control the spread of infection and protect others from illness and/or injury.

Hand Washing:

Hand washing is the single most effective technique in the prevention of the spread of disease and infection. Hands should be washed for 40-60 seconds thoroughly with soap and water before and after eating or food preparation, after using the bathroom, before and after performing personal care, and immediately following contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. If you are using an alcohol rub to disinfect your hands, use enough product to cover your hands, and rub until dry.

Use a paper towel or cloth towel to turn off the faucet or to open the door.

Wear Gloves:

Wear gloves when handling body related materials, including blood, secretions, excretions, membranes, bodily fluids, etc. Change gloves between tasks. Properly discard gloves after completion of task and perform proper hand washing hygiene protocol.

Protect Your Face:

Our faces are portals for infectious diseases to make their way into our bodies. It is important to protect your eyes, nose, mouth and skin against splashes of sprays of blood, fluids, secretions, etc.

Disposal of Medical Waste and Infectious Materials:

Used, disposable supplies such as diapers, incontinence pads, non-blood saturated dressings, IV tubing’s and gloves should be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag and securely fastened at the top to close. If a heavy-duty bag is not available, the items should be double-bagged and disposed of with the client’s regular garbage or as instructed by client.

Items heavily contaminated with blood or bodily fluids contaminated with blood should be placed in a leak-proof heavy-duty bag or tied securely at the neck and double-bagged. All bags should be appropriately labeled as biohazardous or color-coded and securely colored prior to removal from the home.

Sanitation in the Home:

Common areas and areas with infectious clients should be regularly cleaned (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, etc.) and frequently touched surfaces must be disinfected once it is recognized that they have been infected.

Linens soiled with infectious waste should be placed directly into the washer and prewashed with cool water and 1 cup of bleach.

Dishes should be washed in a dishwater or soaked and cleaned in hot, soapy water.

Gloves should be worn when handling linen and washing dishes.
